That's 8 day-long clinics, so it's only $600/day, tuition only. What's the cost of an all-day private at a top resort? Comparable? I'd guess so.

However, this factoid makes ESA events look like even more of a value. Personally, I think group lessons are much better for learning than private lessons, especially if the group is all aiming in the same direction in terms of skills, interest and motivation. (Shameless plug, sorry.)

Daily ski tune $320. Custom bootfitting and alignment $250. Valet parking and a locker. Priceless.

There are a half a dozen or so that post here, from the Windham School.

I can't wait to see their response !

Indeed.

That is a fierce heap of money. It's a place I have never heard of.

Could you not get an all-inclusive package (flights, board and lodging, ski pass and lessons) in a decent European resort and still have change ?

Or would you rather waste money on lessons on a Mickey Mouse hill ?
8 days of lessons? Calling it a f***in clinic does not alter the fact.

And you reckon Switzerland is expensive !

Believe me, Switzerland, even in early season was a bargain compared to this! It's astonishing what the psycho-babble generation can get away with.
"Just give us 4,800 dollars and we'll take away all your fears!" Yeah right! :

LM,
We have a very upscale clientell at Windam Mountain and the price of "power learn" also includes other perks. Power Learn is headed by Mermer (who I hope to ski with tomorrow AM) and is a no-nonsence approach to instruction for those who are willing to make a real committment to learn.

This is not the woman's fear clinic which is also headed up by Mermer.

By the way, what's with Windham having no prime-season midweek discount days for us locals to take advantage of, like Hunter and Belleayre offer? Are they afraid all us one-toothed yokels will scare away the upscale clientele?

mogulgunkie,
Windham does have a midweek season pass available, discounted before Oct 15, and does offer frequent skier discounts, and other discount options for you. Call and ask about discount deals. I wish we offered more. The mountain would welcome you and I'd love to ski some bumps with you.

One of my best friends works there, and I have noticed they they do have some wealthy clients there. My guess is that there is enough demand (rich, willing clients) and small enough supply, that they can get away with those prices. However, I hope Mermer gets a good chunk of all that. It would piss me off if a talented instructor like her, who can generate demand like that, brings in all that money, only for Winham to reap the rewards, and leave her with 10% of the take.

I had a look at their website and I already learnt that Americans spell 'kerb' as 'curb'. As in 'Adult lessons'

First Class - We meet you at the curb!

There's me thinking I had spotted a typo. Some learning can still be acquired for free.

Us americans don't speak English real good, and I ain't a real good speller, but here, curb is the correct spelling for a raised cement or stone edging along a road or parking lot. It is also a verb as in "curb your dog".

skiing with Mermer

I skied with Mermer both last year and this year at the Snow Projam. Whether you join her Fear clinic or a regular clinic, the experience is unequaled. (I'm not sure what I just said but believe me that you should take any opportunity to ski with her ... yes $4800 is out of most of our price ranges but if you can find a clinic you can afford then do it.)

Yikes is right to me, too!

I've stopped skiing at Windham when my friend almost fell into a large hole early season during a warm up run in the upper area of the Great White Way trail where it turns left off the cat walk that was unmarked without any type of red warning pole. The hole was about 2 feet by 5 feet long situated over a small creek run off. It could of really did some damage, broken neck and skis, so on.

The grooming isn't so hot either, talk about catching an edge.

Do you know how many ski trips with air fare, car rentals, cheap hotels, lift tickets and ski lessons I could take with $4800 bucks? Plenty, I would be in hog heaven.

Besides there's something missing with Windham. I had real hopes I would enjoy the place. It lacks something. I can't put my finger on it. Maybe it's the so-so trail variety or the so-so grooming and snowmaking. But I think it lacks a spirit. I know corny as that might sound. Old beat up Belleayre has more personality than most big resorts and Hunter has a rep to uphold.

Why is it that when someone is successful , passionate, and caring in our industry they get chastised for trying to make a living ! All aspects of our lives deal with layers of opportunity. What does it matter from a cultural perspective the layer that one markets to. If I could get $1000.00 per person whoes boots I fit and have to only come in contact with 100 people a year I would BUT I would then be percieved as a rip off to those that cannot afford that price. Isn't it o.k. to charge for your services and deliver the goods. I do not think there is any one out there that would not like to do less and get paid more. Believe me as an entrepeneur there is no such thing as doing less work for more money. I think Mermer should get nothing but accolades for sharing her talents and teaming up with a local resort such as Windham to offer a cutting edge program and charging what her time is worth.

Good Luck

To all who sign up. Remember to remain teachable - $600.00 worth and there are some things money can't buy - for lessons, there's master card.

They will probably fill all slots and you will hear that New Yauk accent. Does Windam have valet parking?

Windam Mountain has valet parking and a ski valet, both from the parking lot and storrage. Often the valet staff gets better tips than the instructors (oops, I shouldn't have said it).

Power Learn is a different class than the fear clinic. (much different price too).

I ski anytime I can with Mermer, and anyone who has skied with her knows why.

If I had that kind of money, I wouldn't hesitate to spend it skiing with a Mermer program, wherever (I don't know Windham). She's unique.

Mermer says "hi", I was talking with her about "Brillant Skiing". Thank you for putting into text what I have learned in my 30 years of teaching skiing. Some of the very same ideas I have been conveying to other skiers, you have brillantly layed out for anyone to learn from and enjoy.

I guess when I look at what I would spend for breakfast , lunch, apres, ski tuning for eight days, then custom boot fitting twice , use of ski School line as a student in Power Learn, etc... Then figure out what I am really spending for access to Mermer it really is a value when compared to cost of a regular private lesson, without knowing the quality of instruction.

PowerLearn-misunderstood

I am working with Mermer on PowerLearn which is not about fear at all but similiar to an intensive PSIA workshop, offered to the public. Windham Mountain is a fabulous training hill and we designed a package with not only Mermer's innovative curriculum but a package that includes the best of what Windham Mountain offers. As far as I know, there is nothing like this program offered anywhere else. The staff consists of Examiners, Dev Team members and DCLs who are savvy, charismatic and know Mermer's unconventional approach. Why should students spend time training during their trip to Aspen or Snowbird, why not master the fundamentals beforehand? We want people who are committed to learning and don't want to waste any time. We've been told for what we are giving, we're not charging enough. I am very interested in how you heard about it. Thanks, Jane. (Lift tickets are included and there are credits for season pass holders and those who have lockers!)

Jane,

They way your post reads, it sounds like the clinic groups are not lead by Mermer. It that correct? I can see the value in it if it's lead by Mermer, but to be led by someone else, especially below the examiner level, for that price, I have a hard time seeing the value.

Just a bit more clarification.
If you ask "how much?", you can't afford it!
If you ask "what do I get for my money?" you will find a whole lot of really neat perks and bonuses just a day trip (actually 8 separate day trips) from Manhattan, with an outcome that makes you prepared to get more of your moneys worth out of your "big trip" out west or accross the pond.

$600/day to learn fundamentals "before going to Aspen or Snowbird"? I am afraid that only the rich and the naive can justify this.

I am curious, how's this going over so far? I see that you've already had clinic days. Have there been enough upscale clientele for your classes?
