New Zealand Snow Conditions in Aug?

I live in Tokyo and am thinking of doing a NZ trip in Aug and am wondering what the snow/terrain conditions are like. I know South America is good and having a great season, from what I hear, but it is very hard to get to from here.

August would have the best odds but it's not a guarantee. I would not recommend going any earlier than that.
