2d Edition - The All-Mountain Skier, by Mark Elling

I just picked up this 2d edition on Wednesday. The 1st Edition is one of my favorite books, but it was written for the older "new" skis like the Elan and Salomon early "cap" skis. Because Elling focuses so heavily on the equipment helping you if you choose the correct stuff, it was a bit outdated.

2d Edition is fully modernized and is not just a reprint. Elling has rewritten much of the 1st Edition to make it fit with more modern skis and boots. His discussion of all topics is basic, straightforward, easy to understand, and easy to read.

I recommend this book even more strongly now that it's modernized.

BTW, has anyone read Eric DesLauriers' new book?

I have, and it's an interesting read. The photography is amazing. The part that I found most interesting, is that while many other books encourage different technique for groomed vs powder skiing, he holds his methodology out as similar for all terrain. He is also a big fan of lightening the inside foot, somewhat similar to Harb's teachings and aludes to the fact that he's worked with or co-ordinated with Harb, in the past. Again, I enjoyed this book. I think you'd like it.

BTW, I like Elling's book as well and just finished going through it about 2 weeks ago. I liked it as well, except for his view that you should use your hip to get the skis on edge. Other than that, good book. I didn't read the 1st edition.

Coach, the hip issue is dear to me... I grew up skiing VT/PA/NY/WV/MD ice/hardpack on old pencil skis, and my technique for bumps was a spring/pivot/land/skid that resulted in some funky hip locations, most of 'em bad. Proper hip movement and location is critical to retaining power when the going gets tough, and I'm just learning how subtle the hip movements can be and still throw off an otherwise good turn.

I have to order Eric D's book. Was hoping to read it before the Academy to talk to him about it there, but alas....

Having taken a clinic from Eric D I really enjoyed his book. Great pictures, clear explanations. The editor is Bill Grout who use to be Editor in Chief for Skiing Magazine. Interesting and easy to read. Gonz, when you get the book or talk to Eric, have him show you the 3 variations of the pedal turn.
