Innovations in Design at the 2013 SIA SNOW Show

  • by nolo Platform Partner

Denver's Colorado Convention Center, where the Snowsports Industries of America's SNOW Show takes place, is an enormous space that is occupied from wall to wall by vendors with every product imaginable for skiers on display. This show is where retail store buyers order the products they will carry next year. There's everything from big stuff like cars and tuning machines to small stuff like lip gloss and ski wax. Clothing and snowboarding have their own shopping districts, but for us anyway, skis and boots are the Main Event. We expect there to be plenty of discussion,... read more

2014 Rossignol Soul 7 Skis Review

  • by mmckay Platform Partner

It is very rare that I get on a ski and say, “I’ve got to have it!” But that was exactly the case on a recent day when I had the chance to demo the2014 Rossignol Soul 7. This ski is brand new for the 2014 season and is Rossignol’s attempt at making a super accessible all mountain freeride ski. The Rossignol Soul 7 is 106mm in the waist, and features tip and tail rocker, combined with camber. These traits combined with a flex that’s on the stiffer side, make for one ski that’s highly capable of any type of terrain or conditions. It was on a sunny day up in Stowe,... read more

Hot Dog...Return of Bobbie Burns and The Ski

From The Ski Journal      A few weeks back I posted that I was excited beyond belief for one particular ski that was to be introduced at SIA 2013. It was “The Ski”. The Ski? What a simplistic name for a ski, well, kind of like “Le Car” if you were French. I guess if Bobbie Burns was French and this was a parallel universe and Bobbie defected from Rossignol and not K2, we could be talking about “Le Ski”, but there was not this fictional parallel universe and we are talking about the good ole U.S. of A. and very well THE ski that defined the Hot Dog era... read more

Electromagnetic Interference and Avalanche Beacons

photo by Bob Peters     Tips to give you the best chance of being located if you're ever caught in an avalanche.  by Tyler Wenzel   I recently read someone mention the potential danger of running a GoPro camera when in areas that you would be using an avalanche beacon for protection—the assertion was quite surprising to me. I could understand a GPS or even an older cell phone causing interference for the avalanche beacon, but a simple camera?   I found two sources of information helpful in researching this (links to both can be found below). The... read more

Kulkea Ski Boot Bags a Must-have for the Slopes

  • by kulkea

The Ski Trekker and Boot Trekker were reviewed by Kari Bodnarchuk, long-time skier and writer for the Boston Globe.  In her article, 8 must-haves for the slopes Kari shared our enthusiasm and understood the utility of the All-in-one ski and boot bag, "Kulkea’s ingenious new bag, the Ski Trekker, was created by a Westwood dad who understands the challenge of carrying mounds of gear. It can haul one pair of adult skis, plus boots, clothes, and other equipment in an organized, civilized way." Base Layers Keep You Comfortable in the Cold

  • by nolo Platform Partner

by Chris Weiss  Skiing underwear is probably the most underappreciated piece of clothing in the sports world. Everyone can get stoked on a new shell or a new pair of feature-filled pants, but base layers? Just throw on whatever’s clean and forget it.   Despite their lack of glamour, ski base layers are some of the most important parts of your ski day. They serve to keep you dry, warm and comfortable throughout a sport that has an uncanny ability to cast soggy misery on its most loyal participants. A new generation of ultra-plush, functional base layers has been... read more

It is time to SWITCH sunglasses

Once moving to Tahoe and dealing with the higher elevations I have put more of a priority on eye protection. Over the years I have been very happy with the glasses and eye protection I have experienced from brands such as Oakley, Smith and Revo but I have never had good luck with models that have claimed to have the option to change lenses, they were either a lower quality lens or were difficult to take out and replace in a timely manner and not put finger prints all over them. So, needless to say, I was skeptical when we were approached with a new... read more

2012-13 Ski Gear Preview for the Dog Days

  • by nolo Platform Partner

2012-13 Ski Gear Preview for the Dog Days by Chris Weiss   August has arrived in one of the hottest, driest summers in history, and the winter couldn’t seem further away. But August leads to September, which leads to fall, and then there’s just one season until winter. It’s time to start thinking gear, if you haven’t already. Though the recent Outdoor Retailer Summer Market was focused on hiking, camping, boating and the like, it also had its fair share of winter gear sprinkled in.   H2O Guides Pow Carver Pro skier and Alaskan guide Dean Cummings... read more
